Kinja'd!!!

I got fired today. Apparently I took too much time helping every customer that came into my department. Then when I didn't seek out people (though still helped out the people that asked for my help) and focused on stocking they complained that I wasn't helping the customers. I honestly tried my best but they just expected me to do way too much in way too little time. I'm a very methodical person when doing something, I may be slow but I make no mistakes when I was putting away books (I'm the son of a carpenter, what can I say, I value perfection). I also value customer service above all else because it won't do you any good to have books on the shelves if no one wants to buy them so that's why I tried to get to every constomer in the department. I guess we just didn't see eye to eye in matter. It really is a shame, besides from the management, I loved working there. Oh well tomorrow's another day.

Oh and here's a souvenir to commemorate my last day at work. I saw this and had to take a pic.

Ah that sucks. The management was not a very good fit for you, it sounds like.

They fired you because you didn't meet their performance metrics, NOT because you're a bad employee. Performance metrics do not always correspond with actual efficiency and good business practice.

Sorry, man. Not to be the irritating optimist, but least you will find another job and probably not be so miserable as you would have been if you'd had this employer for a long time. Good luck with the job search.

That sucks, man. Sounds like the whole thing wasn't a good fit for you anyway. What was the job?

Bummer. If I was in your position I would be second guessing everything I did and beating myself up about how stupid I am that one time in fifth grade I should have talked to that girl but didn't and the time someone said something to me and it hurt me. I would be rehearsing these things over and over again until I fell asleep exhausted. I hope you aren't like this and will be kind to yourself and allow yourself to make mistakes. Move on and I hope you find a even better paying job you enjoy even more. I think some of this is things I need to tell myself.

Yeah, I know, I'm not too distraught over the whole thing. I got plenty of money saved and I don't have to really pay any bills. I just really worked there because it was fun and also to save up for a nice road bike. I think I might try to get a job somewhere where I'm just dealing with customers and don't have other duties.

I worked as a bookseller at a Hastings. I loved it because I discovered a ton of books from customers and I was able to sell a lot of the books that I recommended.

If it helps any, there would probably be about a .01% chance you would still be together with your 5th grade sweetheart. Also, don't care what others say to you, if there's one thing high school taught me is that everyone I know has an opinion of me and unless I see some use to them I don't really care what they think, I don't give them the satisfaction of pissing me off. Infact after they fired me I told my manager that I enjoyed working with him and it's a shame that it didn't work out. And some of that is true, he was a pretty decent dude and to be fair I fell behind in what I was suppose to do and the dude has to show results to his boss. Now do I agree that I should of been fired? No? I think I worked my hardest in the way that I knew how, I was friendly and helpful to everyone and I probably made the company more money than they paid me. The point is that I still will probably go in the store quite a bit and I don't want there to be any awkward tension.

As my Dad always says, "Everything happens for a reason". You never know, I guess, but it's possible. Maybe you'll get a job building diesel wagon manual miatas...:)

Sounds like a typical case of an incompetent management team blaming an employee for their own failings. If you were a bit older, more experienced, and more confident, you'd have been able to stand up for yourself and they'd have had to do their jobs properly - but then if you were older and more experienced, you probably wouldn't be there at all, which is why idiots like that keep their jobs.

Since you've been binned anyway, you might as well complain to the company about being bullied the way you were. Managers giving you contradictory or inadequate instructions and then criticising you for failing to do the impossible is entirely unacceptable, and really can't be construed as anything other than petty bullying.

That's Hastings, right? I used to have a Hastings across the street from my apartment back when I was in college (all of 3 years ago). The sales staff was, as far as I can tell, trained to casually bother me as much as possible without actually helping; if I asked for real help, they would get back to me in 15 minutes. Pretty sure they all worked for minimum wage, so I understand a little apathy. Never mind the nightmare that was trying to sell things to them. I brought in a stack of 16 nice, well-kept books and got an offer of $4 cash or $10 store credit. I left, went to a more distant used bookstore and got $37. Their used media were sold with the weakest discounts I'd ever seen (we're talking used copies of Forza 5 selling at $55.) Their new stuff was all way overpriced; movies, games, books, it was across the board. Meanwhile, I had to practically swim to get to the useful stuff on the back walls, because the front of the floor was full to the gills with gimmicky crap like $50 electric guitars, Nerf guns and LEGOs at a 30% to 50% premium, novelty "designer" drumsticks and Captain Kirk dolls. I'm sure the idea was for me to pass it all and hope that some inane pop culture property would catch my wandering eye and leave me unable to resist a purchase.

In short, as far as I can tell they're a crap company, designed around minimal compensation and uninformed customers, and they just made another crap decision by firing you. My sympathies.
